A union or coupler is used in pipelines to enable the removal and replacement of equipment such a pumps and valves, etc.They are available with glue sockets or male / female threads and are also available as part of single and double union ballvalves.
Operation the union nut unscrews and slides back, as shown in the drawing opposite. It is then possible to lift the equipment (pump/valve etc) out of the pipe run without having to cut, bend or otherwise distress the pipe. When the union is remade, the internal O ring is compressed against the opposite side of the fitting creating the seal.
