The Vortex filter is simple device. Water enters the cylinder at a tangent which starts the water rotation, as in a centrifuge, the heavy waste particles are sent to the side of the cylinder where they fall into a thin layer of slower moving water caused be friction wth the cylinder wall., this 'boundary layer' causes these heavier particles to fall into the lower part of the cylinder and finally to settle in the cone.  Clear water rises up the cylinder and can leave either through the side or through a centre discharge pipe.  The vortex filter is most efficient when fed by gravity through 110mm or 82mm pipework and must be  installed as the primary filtration before any other biological filters.
Solids collect in the cone where they can be drained to waste.
To get the best filtration from a Vortex it is important to install one of  the correct size.  A small vortex with  a high flow rate of water will result in solids passing straight through to the next filtration stage. A bigger filter has a longer retention time and therefore better settlement of solids. The direction of flow of  water does not affect the solids settlement capability of the filter.

All our Vortex filters can be gravity or pump fed. If you if you need to pump directly to the vortex you will need this adaptor 110mm to 1½" fbsp thread
Flow rate and pipe size. The limiting factor on flow rate through a Vortex is the size and position of the outlet pipe. We normally set the center of the outlet on the side discharge Vortex at 155mm from the top. Water flowing through this is at ZERO head  the maximum through put of 110mm pipe at zero head is 2300 gph.. If higher flow rates are needed then another 110mm outlet or a 160mm outlet should be fitted. Exactly the same principle applies to the center discharge Vortex, as it is the level of the internal stand pipe which is relevant, not the outlet through the side of the  cylinder.
Installation
All vortex filters can be gravity or pump fed. The centre discharge vortex can be sited above the pond level but when installed in this way it can only be pump fed. Adapter pipe fittings are  also required so the pipework from the pump can be attached- see pump fed adaptor

Installation
For gravity fed filters the top of the filter, when installed,  should be a minimum of 1" higher than the top level of the pond water.

All filters must be sited on a suitable level concrete base .
